Thailand has been known worldwide for its tropical climate, pristine beaches, inexpensive cost of living and a diverse culture and lifestyle. For these reasons, it has attracted tourists and expats from around the world for both short-term and long-term stays.
Generally, a foreign citizen who wishes to enter the Kingdom of Thailand is required to obtain a visa from a Royal Thai Embassy or a Royal Thai Consulate-General. However, nationals of certain countries do not require a visa if they meet visa exemption requirements.
Here are the types of visas you need when you plan to enter Thailand either on a short-term or long-term stays:
Tourist Visa Ordinary passport holder who wishes to enter the Kingdom for the following purposes is subjected to be granted Tourist visa:
- Tourism
- Short visit to family living in Thailand.
- Medical treatment with registered hospitals.
- Participants of MICE (Meeting, Incentives, Convention & Exhibitions) supported by TCEB.

Business and Investor Visa
Ordinary passport holder who wishes to enter the Kingdom for conducting business or working
is subjected to be granted a Non-Immigrant B Visa. This type of visa requires a letter from a
company stating the objective of the visit to Thailand or document showing correspondence
with trading partners in Thailand (e.g., letter confirming employment details, business
registration or business license of a partner company in Thailand).
Non-Immigrant ED Visa
Ordinary passport holder, whose purpose of visit is to study in Thailand, is subjected to be
granted Non-Immigrant ED Visa. The following are categories:
- To study in a higher education level (university/college)
- Internship, attending training or seminar conducted by International Organizations
- Buddhism studies (Monk) or performing Buddhism ritual activities
- Foreigners seeking to promote or involve in a religious mission with approval from relevant Thai authorities
Non-Immigrant O Visa
Family of a Thai national (Immediate family includes spouse and children) or a foreign national with a valid stay in Thailand can be granted a Non-Immigrant O Visa. The Thai Non-Immigrant Visa O is issued for the following reasons:
- To live with your Thai spouse (Thai Marriage Visa)
- To travel with your family member who is traveling for work or studying purposes
- To work for a state enterprise or social welfare organization.
Transit Visa
Ordinary passport holders who wish to enter the Kingdom for the following purposes are to be granted Transit Visa:
- Travel in transit through the Kingdom in order to proceed to the country of destination or to re-enter his/her own country
- Participate in sports activities for no longer than one month (sportsmen, sportswomen)
- Person in charge or crew of a conveyance coming to a port, station or area in the Kingdom
Non-Immigrant O-A Long Stay (Retirement Visa)
Applicants applying for a Non-Immigrant O-A visa for retirement purpose must be at least 50 years of age and above and receive a monthly pension income of 65,000 baht. Holder of this type of visa is allowed to stay in Thailand for 1 year. Employment of any kind is strictly prohibited under this type of visa.
SMART Visa SMART Visa is offered to foreign experts, executives, entrepreneurs and investors who wish to enter into the Kingdom of Thailand to work or to invest in the following “10 S-Curve” industries or the country’s targeted industries:
- Next-Generation Automotive
- Smart Electronics
- Affluent, Medical and Wellness Tourism
- Agriculture and Biotechnology
- Food for the Future
- Automation and Robotics
- Aviation and Logistics
- Biofuels and Biochemicals
- Digital
- Medical Hub

- Wealthy Global Citizen
- Wealthy Pensioner
- Work – From – Thailand Professional
- Highly – Skilled Professional
- Spouses and dependents of LTR visa holders will also qualify for the same visas.
